At a 36th division reunion in Brownwood Texas veterans urged Congress to investigate the Rapido river crossing in Italy two years earlier. The resolution cites General Mark Clark and calls for reforms to prevent wasteful sacrifices by a flawed high command.
The Wage Adjustment board in Washington approved a 12 percent raise plus 4 cents an hour for carpenters in the Lubbock area, setting a new rate of $1.3712 per hour effective Jan 18. The agreement, reached democratically by W. G. McMillan and W. E. Griffin, covers non federal construction in an area around Lubbock including Amarillo, Wichita Falls, Abilene, Roswell, Clovis and Hobbs.

Victoria January 19 The Victoria county district jury acquitted Sheriff Vail Ennis of Bee county on the murder charge in the death of Felix Rodriguez last July. The trial followed indictments against Ennis for murder in Rodriguez and his two brothers Antonio and Domingo. The slaying occurred when officers served a court order at the Rodríguez home near Beeville to reclaim the children of Geranimo Rodríguez.
Iran appeals to the United Nations Security Council to investigate Soviet interference in Iran's internal affairs after failed direct talks with Moscow. Seyed Hassan Taqizadeh signs the note urging action under Charter Article 35. The move follows Soviet-backed Azerbaijani unrest and Syria Lebanon demands for British and French troop evacuations.
The Navy and Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution unveiled a sound fixing and ranging system to locate air and ship survivors up to 2000 miles offshore. Operation uses TNT charges and hydrophone arrays to map explosion signals, enabling plots of survivor positions within a square mile. A fire at Wheeler Ford utility supply company in Ralls started in an auxiliary supply room and sent flames over 100 feet into the air from butane storage. Fire Chief Raleigh Keith described a dangerous approach to keep a blast from endangering tanks and causing widespread damage. Fire crews fought the blaze, limiting damage mainly to telephone and electric power lines.
General H. H. Arnold commander of the U S Army Air forces is said to be resting comfortably at a country club after treatment at the American Clinic for a heart ailment. He has been touring the west coast of South America.
The House Labor Committee expects to approve a new strike control bill next week likely Tuesday. The measure centers on fact finding with Truman recommendations possibly modified. Ten of eighteen members expected to vote, with plans for floor action and a lean toward compromise.
