Secretary of War Stimson reported American army losses on the Western Front from D-day to Jan 1 total 332,912 with 54,562 killed 232,672 wounded and 45,678 missing. December's tally was 74,788 including 10,419 killed and 43,554 wounded. Most missing likely German prisoners.
Bowen main line buses resumed service as drivers ended a two day strike after President H. Moore pledged retroactive wage payments by Friday. The return occurred after a War Labor Board hearing prompted by union noncompliance with a back to work order.
London Jan 18 American airmen now fly almost entirely within armies during missions over Germany. Their new flak suit features a specially hardened steel back and front, replacing the old protection from the heavy metal seat cing. Since the armor suits were developed, casualties from enemy fire have been reduced.
At Nagoya’s waterfront the Kokuki factory, a key Nagoya plant for fighter and bomber aircraft, was said to be at least 40 percent out of commission after a recent attack. Brig. Gen. Haywood Hansell reported 17 percent of the roof was damaged and noted prior photos from Dec. 18 show worse damage than expected after the Jan. 14 raid.
Lt. Gen. George S. Patton Jr. issued a Christmas greeting to every officer and enlisted man of the Third Army. The card carried a prayer asking Almighty God to restrain rains, grant fair weather for battle, and help soldiers advance from victory to victory while crushing oppression and establishing justice.

A blaze damaged a building in Kansas City today where Louis Katz stored items for a new grocery. Damage to the store was minor but Katz estimated a high loss as onlookers seized canned goods such as pineapple salmon and sardines during the incident.
Gen. Salvador Castaneda Castro was declared elected president of El Salvador on January 18, finishing the national election with 312,754 votes.
Wartime advertising promotes Be Joseph Aspirin as the top selling aspirin product with a sensational claim of being the world’s largest seller. The copy emphasizes low price and broad appeal to readers seeking affordable relief.
Abilene Texas January 18 Second Air Force headquarters at Colorado Springs Colo announced that Col Harry Weddington of San Antonio commandant of Abilene Army Airfield has also assumed command of Avenger field at Sweetwater. He will oversee operations at both bases and report to Second Air Force.
