Market Opens Slow Then Rises On Banks Rates Drop
New York stocks edged higher after a slow start as the Dow rose about 4.4 points led by gains in airlines and rails. Analysts cited rate cuts by major banks and generally lower rates boosting equity appeal while foreign investors continued buying as exchange rates stabilized. Volume on the NYSE was about 15.8 million shares with 70 new highs and 590 declines.
