Shrewd bandits loot Tropical Park racetrack

Two men in workman attire robbed the Tropical Park clubhouse taking about 108000 dollars in cash and checks. Police described the pair as white Americans, one tall one short, using two revolvers and a tool belt disguise. The heist occurred as patrons left and the cashier and guard were forced into a closet. The loss was insured and investigators questioned about a dozen track staff.

Clouds Hold Down Loss In Valley

A cloud cover in the Lower Rio Grande Valley lessened frost damage to vegetables and citrus while a new cold snap kept sub freezing temperatures in many areas. In Lubbock the low was near zero to 10 degrees with a 32 degree high and winds 10 to 15 mph. Deaths from the cold rose nationwide to 50 as Plainview investigates Jim Sandoval's death after exposure in sub-zero weather. Water pipes required more plumbers as about 380 calls flooded city crews.

Connally and Smith to be inaugurated today in Texas

Texas Democrats will inaugurate John B. Connally as governor and Preston Smith as lieutenant governor at the Capitol Lawn after a Monday night rally in Austin. Vice President Lyndon B. Johnson attended the event, greeting Connally as Smith spoke on four program goals focusing on sound government, proven performance, hard work, and strong leadership.

Kennedy urges historic tax cut to spur economy and Cold War aims

President Kennedy asked a divided Congress for a record $13.5 billion tax cut aimed at financing a full employment economy and offsetting Cold War pressures.
