Quitaque residents hail the re opened Rocky Mountain Rail Tunnel ten miles south of Quitaque after a 17 month delay. Fort Worth and Denver railroad restored service with a dirt fill project allowing two daily freights from Childress to Lubbock. Mrs. Bill Sauls near the tunnel reports heavy curiosity from 500 to 1,000 visitors seeking views of the sandstone bore. The tunnel, blasted straight through sandstone almost 700 feet, had been derailed 13 cars long ago, and local interest remains high as trains resume passage New Year’s Day.
