Pope Paul VI vows continued Vietnam peace push in new year
Pope Paul VI told diplomats at the Vatican he will persist in peace efforts in Southeast Asia and urged responsible leaders to move toward a just and durable peace. He spoke in French at the Vatican's annual New Year address, thanking the 59 diplomats for their reception of his initiatives. The pontiff did not name Vietnam but referenced the Southeast Asian conflict and reiterated hopes for negotiations with major powers. An aside notes Crater Lake in Oregon was named in 1869 for its striking blue waters.
