Pope Paul VI vows continued Vietnam peace push in new year
Pope Paul VI told diplomats at the Vatican he will persist in peace efforts in Southeast Asia and urged responsible leaders to move toward a just and durable peace. He spoke in French at the Vatican's annual New Year address, thanking the 59 diplomats for their reception of his initiatives. The pontiff did not name Vietnam but referenced the Southeast Asian conflict and reiterated hopes for negotiations with major powers. An aside notes Crater Lake in Oregon was named in 1869 for its striking blue waters.

Liberals Move To Oust Powell From Chairmanship
Democratic liberals plan to strip Adam Clayton Powell of the Education and Labor Committee chair but allow him to stay in Congress. The move targets Powell and seeks to upset the House seniority system at the Democratic caucus, with Carl Perkins named to chair the Powell committee if approved. If Powell remains, another plan would seek to deny him his seat at the start of the 90th Congress.
