Second Try In Africa Very Good Heart Transplant News

Cape Town reports Dr Christian Barnard implanted a new heart in 58 year old dentist Philip Blatberg whose heart began beating on its own without prior electric shock. The patient regained consciousness quickly and was described as in very good condition. The operation lasted about five hours and followed Barnard's earlier transplant of Louis Washkansky, who died 18 days later.

Twelve year old extinguishes Christmas tree fire at home

Fred Hendrickson of 2302 49th Street acted quickly during a Christmas tree blaze. He alerted via operator, closed doors to slow the fire, and guided firefighters to evacuate three younger siblings and a neighbor before responders contained the flames. Fire officials estimate $1,000 in damages from a faulty extension cord.

New Texas license rules add color photo and longer validity

The Texas driver license by mail ends and new color photo cards start with the DPS. Renewals double in cost but last four years. Commercial and chauffeur licenses rise to two year terms with higher fees. Duplicates increase from 25 cents to 1 dollar. Applications must be made at the DPS office 4010 Ave. See page 8.
