Texas Leads Nation in New Year's Holiday Fatalities

Texas reported 25 deaths through the three day period ending midnight Sunday with 36 projected by the public safety department. National figures showed 283 fatalities by Sunday night as states like California Illinois Michigan Ohio and North Carolina trailed. A Kalamazoo area crash killed five teenagers when a car was struck at a crossing by two trains.

Marines End New Year Truce Offensive Returns in Vietnam

After a 48 hour cease fire, U S and Allied forces resumed offensive operations as clashes tallied 177 since Saturday. A Marine attack near Hue aimed to halt a 1,000 man North Vietnamese push while naval forces reported a trawler sunk and another on fire. Casualties were unconfirmed. The Viet Cong claimed large enemy losses, and naval forces supported operations with patrol boats aircraft and destroyer Falgout.

A carpenter named John Q Ozio his fiance Mrs. Bobby Mayberry and Ozio s elderly mother Victoria Ozio were killed in an Orange apartment. The suspect Ronnie Mayberry 14 son of the couple was charged as a juvenile with their murders. Craig Ozio 16 was wounded but survived. The trio had returned from Arkansas when the attack occurred after a disrupted marriage and a family rift.
