The National Safety Council warns the three day New Year period saw a rising toll with more than six deaths per hour as bad weather contributed. Texas reported seven highway deaths with shootings and stabbings lifting total fatalities to nineteen.
A New Year blizzard across the Plains left at least five airplanes missing with eight people aboard while a sixth pilot survived 18 hours in a Nebraska crash by using parts of his seat for insulation. Texas saw at least six deaths, four in traffic and one in a plane wreck, as the storm paralyzed Silver City New Mexico with eight inches of snow and four foot drifts. Police urged residents to stay home as many travelers and bus riders faced nights in a school near Albuquerque with 100-plus stranded motorists from California and New York.
A record crowd estimated at 1.5 million braved 40 degree chill for the 71st Tournament of Roses parade in ENA California. Long Beach won the sweepstakes with an orchid and rose float while Occidental Life Insurance earned the grand prize for Swan Lake. Vice President Richard Nixon served as grand marshal with his family.

Three year old Tina Brandon of Dallas died after a sleeve on her coat caught in a Love Field moving walkway. Witnesses say the rubber floor pulled her down and gears meshed over her body before emergency stop. Officer E L Hardy helped free her as she was removed from the mechanism.
In Moscow Khrushchev toasted the New Year with a hint the Soviet Union might cut its armed forces if West delays universal disarmament. Tass distributed his remarks after a Kremlin reception, tying the idea to four years of disarmament and the use of missiles for defense.
Two 16 year old boys admitted they planted nine sticks of dynamite on a football field in Spruce Pine North Carolina. The blast caused $10 000 in damage to about 20 25 buildings and shattered store windows along two main streets. The youths were released on $1000 bond each and charged with setting off an explosion in the city limits.
UPI reports New Year customs in Italy include tossing pots pans and rubbish at midnight. In Rome a woman in Pescara allegedly threw her husband out the window in a drunken moment before reconciling over more wine.
