Paul Bunyan Legend Writer James Stevens Dies at 79
Seattle author James F. Stevens, creator of Paul Bunyan and Babe the blue ox stories, dies at 79. Born in Albia Iowa, he moved to Idaho and Idaho and wrote poems for the Saturday Evening Post in 1916. He later wrote nine books and over 250 articles including The Black Duck Dinner and Green Power.

Gunman kills two Michigan troopers in roadside shooting
State police say Troopers Charles Stark of Three Oaks and Gary Ramp of New Buffalo were shot by a gunman during a traffic stop. The suspect, later killed in a high speed chase, was not identified. A woman in his car, Dorothy Pearl Broz, 22, surrendered and was charged with two counts of first degree murder. A Detroit officer was also slain in a pawn shop holdup.
