A car tumbled from a parking garage second floor and crashed onto a downtown street injuring driver Ed Miller of Dallas and a pedestrian. Nebraska fans Erwin Kamarath and his daughter were nearby. Kamarath was struck by a brick but not seriously hurt. Miller and Kamarath were treated at Parkland Hospital and released.
The year 1964 brought prosperity and industrial expansion to Lubbock and the South Plains with Litton Industries and Hanes planning plants, a population around 155000, a new State School bid, downtown revitalization, and a hall curling of beauty shops debate. Max Tidmore elected mayor in a runoff as crime and water disputes persisted.
The $30,000 settlement ends a case accusing Baker of using Senate influence to steer Melpar Inc to drop a contract with Capitol Vending Co. The suit named Baker and allies including Serv-A Corp and Ernest Tucker. The investigation into Baker’s business activities is set to resume.
Thomas David Stofel a 24 year old pickup operator for Frank Hodges Cement Contractor was killed when his truck was struck by a Santa Fe freight train at the 6th Street crossing in Kress shortly before 1 p m Thursday. He lived at 1515 39th Street and leaves wife Gail and three sons Richard Dean and Stephen. Funeral arrangements are pending.
The Remanche Journal News Services report a winter storm sweeping the northern half of the nation with rain sleet and snow. Helicopter mercy missions aided about 500 stranded people in Northern California mountains while blizzards closed highways across the region. More snow and flooding threaten the Sierra and redwood areas as breakups bring new flood risks and continued cold winds in California.
Nearing 72, Gardner the defeated candidate plans to collect unemployment compensation for 26 weeks for himself and his wife, saying he contributed to the system through Mrs Mud Gardner Co. He held a state Senate seat and ran an auto agency before selling it in 1957. now a real estate holding company president, he says he is just a figurehead and has not earned from the firm since his senatorial term. Arthur Everett II reports Martin DalConte a police officer with Garden City Long Island and father of five was gravely wounded by three bullets fired from his own service revolver allegedly by his 15 year old daughter Carol Ann and the event led to charges against both daughter and mother Lillian 38 DalConte had left duty at 4 pm and went to Nassau County police headquarters crying he supported two other jobs beyond his police salary and a department store incident preceded the tragedy with shoplifting charges at Macy's.
