Chicago reports a shift in widowhood as grandmothers battle traditional care roles. Dr. Helen Lopata of Loyola University notes widows may live independently in their own homes, reducing reliance on children. A four year study of 200 widows found only 20 living with children.
Texas Senate cites at least twelve million missing sales tax dollars due to lax collection by the Comptroller with estimates up to fifty eight million. The Nationalist government of Taiwan declared on Monday it would deem any agreement Nixon made with the Chinese Communists as void in relation to Nationalist China. A Foreign Ministry statement said Taiwan’s position remains that the issue is settled only when the Nationalists recapture the mainland, while calling Nixon’s accord with Beijing an invitation of trouble. The note referenced awaiting U S input from Marshall Green and noted stock-market declines as anxieties rise over a potential Communist takeover.
Wesley Smith, 46, of Midland died when his car and a grain truck collided near the Martin County line seven miles north of here. The trucks exploded. Smith was trapped and pronounced dead at the scene. Ricky Lynn Richardson 21 of Olton and Gilbert Richardson of Olton escaped injury along with Joe Willie Fulbright of Midland. Fullbright’s car reportedly swerved prior to impact and Smith’s vehicle was dragged about 150 feet under the grain truck. Investigators and Midland fire units responded to extinguish the blaze.
