The Advisory Commission on Disaster Rehabilitation led by Dr. Jack Steele of Texas Tech University calls for a full statistical study of Lubbock's economy. Faculty and students would research the local economic base to propose how new jobs could be created and support library construction. See STUDY Page 6
A local land use plan for a Day Care project was sent back to the drawing board after a council member called the current rules ridiculous. The final plan must accompany the application for funding and could be approved at a special council meeting at 1 p.m. Wednesday. Funds would enable land purchases in May if the plan passes.
The Panhandle South Plains Fair Association held a luncheon meeting to elect its new officers. The report appears in Page 1 Section B of the Texas Tech gathered materials.
A study of transportation was ordered to explore relocating the once proposed Pri exhibit space to another area within the civic center. The action aims to resolve layout concerns and improve traffic flow during events.
Gov Preston Smith’s pick Manuel DeBusk for a six year term on the Texas College Coordinating Board was rejected by the Senate in a 12 to 19 vote. DeBusk, a Dallas resident and former Texas Tech board chairman, faced opposition over tuition and grants policies. Reported cloudy foamy water in south Lubbock prompted city officials to investigate. Residents complained of brown foamy water as crews addressed the issue and ensured chlorine residuals remained in the supply.
Elks Lodge 1348 awarded the Citizens of the Year honor to Lubbock residents for selfless rebuilding after the May 11 tornado. Don Heath, exalted ruler, presented the award to a city praised for its spirit during a time of crisis.
