Death Toll Mounts In Midwest Storms Tornado Toll Reported

Rigid price supports victory seen in Senate poll

Mystery slaying in Lamesa with pistol clues sought

Dawson County officers investigate the Friday night shooting of 60 year old Herman Lake Curtis at the Amesa service station. A small caliber pistol is in custody for testing, three empty cartridge cases were found, and relatives are being questioned to identify a motive as robbery is ruled out. Funeral services are planned.

Odessa Pair Seeks Daughter’s Release From Girlstown Suit

A habeas corpus hearing for a 14 year old girl held at Girlstown near Whiteface was postponed by Judge Victor Lindsey. Alvin R. Allison filed the suit on behalf of the Odessa couple claiming the child is their natural daughter and has not received proper ward care. The hearing was moved to 10 a.m. next Friday due to Lindsey’s Lubbock court duties. The girl has lived at Girlstown since November 1955.

East Germany Rail Disaster Kills 35, Injures 40

A double engined freight train collided with a passenger train in Communist East Germany. At least 35 people died and 40 were seriously injured in the fatal crash, described as the worst rail disaster in the region in years.

Hunt For Woman's Body Planned Today

Plainview February 25 Special. A body search to prove a murder will be conducted Sunday by 75 horsemen in Lamb County sandhills between Olton and Spade, near the Hale County farm home of Andrea Phares who disappeared May 4. Hale County Sheriff Ted Andrews and Texas Rangers will head the effort with deputies from Hale Lamb and Hockley counties and the Petersburg Riding Club participating.

County Spelling Bee Champs To Be Named This Week

In the final week of 1956 county spelling bees thirteen champions will be named this week to enter the Tub bock Avalanche Journal Spelling Bee March 17. About 2 000 students have spelled in school bees and a champion will be named from each of 14 counties. Bailey County champion was chosen Friday. The county bees will spell at 1 30 p m March 17 at O L Slaton Junior High School Auditorium. The winner goes to National Snelling Bee Week in Washington D C in May with expenses paid by the Avalanche Journal.

Dust storm halts six flights over Lubbock with low visibility

Six scheduled airline flights failed to land in Lubbock Friday night as civil aviation officials cited low visibility of about a half mile and winds from 45 to 50 mph with gusts up to 60. Braniff International and Continental Air Lines were involved. three Braniff flights from Dallas could not land, one went to Amarillo, two returned to Dallas.

Dust Storm Sweeps Texas as Winds Died Down

The duster region across Texas faded into the Gulf as winds eased and small craft faced pounding seas. In Lubbock residents cleaned sidewalks with forecasts of more dust, while Texas Tech reported gusts to 82 mph late Friday night, the highest since 1951.
