Weather officials warned of a deep freeze with a snow risk spreading across the South Plains and major cities including Dallas Austin and El Paso. Light misty snow or drizzles were reported in places as temperatures cooled to near 24 degrees through Tuesday morning.
A high East official said Tuesday hopes were dim for 51 miners trapped after a mine explosion 37 miles southwest of a location. Fifty-one men were at the scene and fifteen were brought to the surface by coal mine crews.
Lubbock begins installation of 137 emergency reporting boxes for fire and police use. The red boxes will be mounted on poles 68 inches high at strategic city locations with more planned in coming years. Kent Isbell, 8, demonstrates how to use one in a photo.
Lubbock stations slash regular gasoline by 3 to 4 cents, independents offer 23.9 to 25.9 cents, majors cut to 26.9 and 28.9 cents. Analysts expect stabilization around 24.9 to 26.9 cents, with possible further cuts to about 20 cents later.
In Chattanooga and nearby cities, demonstrations over segregated lunch counters escalated into brawls. About 30 African American youths sat at the counter prompting around 100 white teens to storm the store. Objects were thrown and several people were hurt as police broke up the chaos.

Three hooded airmen admitted nine armed robberies on the South Plains and were sentenced to 25 years each in the penitentiary for a $105 grocery holdup in Lubbock last January. They pleaded guilty to robbery by assault, a reduced charge from robbery by firearms.
