Heavy snows abate as drizzle dampens Texas area

Frigid South Plains weather lingered with light drizzle and overcast skies from Lubbock to Midland. Cold temperatures and damp conditions eased snow in Far West Texas while lingering moisture offered little relief to farmers ahead of the growing season.

Plains Toll Spirals Nine Hurt In Weekend Crashes

Three people died in traffic accidents in Lubbock and nearby Hale Center and Anton raising the regional toll to 18 matching last year. Nine others were injured in a spate of crashes in Lubbock with no serious injuries reported. Victims included Madelyn Williams 46 of Idalou Robert Jones Lewis Jr of Canadian and Thomas Leo Markham 44 of Anton. Williams died in a collision at North Street and Chicago Avenue Lewis died south of Hale Center on US 62 83 and Markham 3.2 miles south of Anton after a crash with a parked tractor on FM 168 in Hockley County. Heart Attack Fatal For Joe Bryant

KCBD TV and KCBD Radio president Joe H. Bryant died of a heart attack in Phoenix after a 6 PM local seizure at the Arizona Biltmore hotel. He would have turned 54 on March 17. Funeral plans were undetermined and his body expected to be flown to Lubbock. Bryant, a Lubbock civic leader, served as 1955 Chamber of Commerce president and led the Texas Tech Foundation Board, with early career as a broadcaster starting in Amarillo.
