HOPES HELD AS FUNDS TIGHTEN ON TEXAS SCHOOLS
The House Appropriations Committee refused to fund a new state school for the retarded or a Texas Tech law school in the 1966 to 1967 appropriations bill. Noted jurist Douglas escapes snowbound trail ordeal
Justice William O. Douglas and three companions were trapped for about nine hours on a snowbound Sandia Mountains trail east of Albuquerque. Rangers found them near 9:20 pm CST and guided them to the base by 10:13 pm. Douglas, 67, described deep snow and high altitude but reported no injuries or food deprivation. The party included J Morgan Smith of the New Mexico forest service and other forest officials and reporters.
