Syndicated Columnist Da vid Lawrence Dies At 84

Washington AP Da vid Lawrence editor and founder of U S News World Report died Sunday in Sarasota Florida at 84. He had a 60 year Washington news career covering 11 presidential administrations and suffered an apparent heart attack at home. Funeral arrangements were incomplete. His widely syndicated conservative column appeared in about 300 newspapers and long ran on the Avalanche Journal editorial pages. His Monday column is on Page 4 See SYNDICATED.

Area Wreck Kills Three in South Plains Fatal Crash

A pickup with six passengers and a cotton burr truck collided seven miles south of Lamesa around 8 15 p m Sunday killing two Andrews residents and a Mexican national. Edurriges Gonzalez Marquez 19 died at the scene. Edwin Valadez and Rudy Nieto Valadez 42 died at Medical Arts Hospital. Three others were critically or gravely injured or in undetermined condition. The burr truck driver Polito Trevino of Patricia was not injured. The Higginbotham Gin Co operated the pickup. The Dawson County fatalities raise the South Plains death toll to 21 for the year.

Large area drug raids net 36 jailed in New Mexico

A Sunday morning coordinated operation by federal, state, county and city officers resulted in 36 arrests across Clovis Portales and Cannon Air Force Base on dangerous drug charges. The raids yielded 30 pounds of what was believed to be marijuana and about 2,000 LSD tablets. John A Tapia, 36, and Junior Tapia, 19, faced multiple distribution counts with bonds totaling 65,300. Suspects were housed in Roosevelt and Curry counties.
