An outbreak of spinal meningitis at Lackland Air Force Base stops new inductees from entering the base. Ft. Polk Ft. Gordon and Ft. Knox also enact containment steps as 58 cases and three deaths occur among basic trainees this year. Trainees at Lackland will finish training there or move to Amarillo, Texas for new recruits.
County tax assessor collector releases 1966 figures showing 35 163 residents registered to vote in Lubbock County by paying poll taxes obtaining exemption certificates or receiving poll tax not paid receipts. Breakdown lists 27 110 paid polls 7 928 exemptions and 125 federal receipts.
A cold front moved through the South Plains bringing light intermittent snow and cooler temperatures. Lubbock and nearby towns saw light snow and a few minor accidents, while Hobbs reported up to four inches in southern New Mexico mountains. Frigid air heading toward the Rockies could plunge temps to 10 below zero in northern Montana. warnings issued for the Dakotas and northwest Minnesota.
