Slain Man Found Buried in Panhandle Snow Drift

Kenneth Short from North Hollywood Calif lay dead with wrists bound and a gunshot wound to the head. Fifteen officers from Texas and New Mexico traced the body to a snow drift near the New Mexico border based on a crude map given by confessed killer David Cooper Nelson of Las Vegas Nev.

Five Die In Odessa Area Auto Crash In Texas

Five persons believed from Odessa Texas died in a head on collision on the San Angelo highway about 12 miles south of Big Spring. Identified victims include Orin Woolum 28 and Mrs Paul Thomas Sweeney 4. One other woman and a infant also died. a sixth person remains critically injured.

Two Panhandle Men Die In Dumas Plane Crash

A light plane crashed five miles northwest of Dumas killing two Panhandle men, Paul Cantrell and James McKibbin, both 32 and 33, employees at Phillips Chemical Co. Cactus plant. The crash occurred amid a day of state news including insurance, lobbying ethics talks, and Texas Tech board actions.

Oilman tied to 2500 campaign gift to Case in gas bill fight

A poverty story from Lubbock is paired with a Senate inquiry into a $2 500 cash campaign donation rejected by Senator Francis Case. Howard B Keck of Superior Oil swore he did not know the money was offered. Elmer Patman used Keck funds to make the gift via John Neff to a Case ally in Sioux Falls. Case voted against the gas bill which later passed and awaits Eisenhower’s signature.

C W Bill Phares pleads innocence in wife murder charge and seeks a writ of habeas corpus in Plainview court Monday. District Judge E A Bills of Lubbock will preside as Joe Cox must present evidence to bind Phares over for grand jury action.

Crime Mounds As Burglary Wave Hits Lubbock Area

Police investigated a surge of burglaries and thefts from cars after bad weather. A break in at a Lawrimore service station on 9th Street and College Avenue yielded a cigarette machine forced open and about $10 to $12 taken. The robbers failed to rob the safe.
