The Harrises deny Patty Hearst made court statements in a taped recording released during a San Francisco pretrial hearing. They claim Hearst was never sexually assaulted or harmed and had freedom to leave or return to her family, countering her testimony about coercion.
The general argues taxpayers must confront updating the Air Force strike force now or pay higher costs later. He calls for a new manned bomber immediately as delays will push the need into a more critical period.
Travis County Grand Jury indicted Senate Secretary Charles A. Schnabel for forgery two thefts and five counts of official misconduct. He posted a 4000 bond after the indictments and earlier posted a 6000 bond on December 30. District Attorney Robert C. Smith said arraignment and trial date discussions are set for February 19.
A federal grand jury investigating antitrust violations by area liquor stores heard testimony Tuesday from 18 owners. The 92 member panel began hearings to review records and prepare for a multi day interview process tied to an August launch of the antitrust probe.
UCAS CRUCES New Mexico workers joined firemen and police in a strike for union recognition. City officials said about half the work force walked off, with sanitation, street crews, and most utility crews out. Police and fire officials also walked off February 3, threatening reduced city services unless demands are met.
The Organization of African Unity named the Soviet backed MPLA the sole government of Angola, with Idi Amin announcing Uganda joined 26 of 46 members in recognizing the ruling faction. UNITA and FNLA faced a diplomatic defeat as MPLA advances, Cuban troops, and Soviet equipment shift the balance in Angola.
Senator Lloyd Bentsen announced he will end his bid for the Democratic presidential nomination and focus on Texas. He said he will not campaign outside Texas, aim for re election to the Senate, and seek a united Texas delegation to the New York convention.
Armed robbers struck Idalou Shamrock service station and Char-King Drive-Up in Lubbock County Tuesday night, taking about 300 dollars total. The Idalou gunman described as black male 25, orange ski cap, fled toward New Deal in a light-green 1964 to 1966 Oldsmobile. The Lubbock holdup suspect described as white male 20s with long brown hair and mustache, 5 feet 10 inches to 5 feet 11 inches, 160 pounds, fled east through an alley after taking 30 to 50 dollars. Police connected gunshots heard near Idalou to the incidents but had no custody.
