Fatal Clovis Road Crash Claims Life Near Lubbock

A two car crash on U S Highway 84 about a mile northwest of Lubbock killed James R. Brown and left at least five others injured two critically. The fiery collision occurred just before midnight Saturday as vehicles traveling west rear ended with one car overturning and burning. The dead man was trapped inside the wreckage.

Bandit Beats Slaton Attendant and Robs Service Station

Slaton Texas attendant Carol West 43 was badly beaten and robbed of 93 dollars by a Negro bandit at the Geer Texa Station near the Mercy Hospital area. West, hospitalized with head injuries, described the assault after the thief followed him in, asked for water, then fled with cash after a scuffle over the register. Police conducted an area search for the suspect with no capture by Saturday night.

Bases Raided by Viet Cong Pushes Casualties Rise

Viet Cong attacked Pleiku and Camp Holloway in South Vietnam, killing eight U.S. servicemen and wounding 62 in two coordinated assaults on military compounds. A third attack near Pleiku killed one more American as 17 helicopters and three transports were destroyed. Suspects Held in Lubbock Slaying Case

Two Lubbock men linked to the 1961 death of Granvel Overstreet were jailed after detectives traced a boast by a local suspect. A third man, already in Huntsville prison for armed robbery, was identified as involved. Overstreet’s decomposed body was found Sept. 5 near the city cemetery.
