Meat prices hovered near two decade highs as demand rose and supply stayed tight. Housewives shun steaks and chops for stew meat and chicken, but experts warn prices may not drop much before spring. Poultry demand could push chicken costs higher while beef and pork hold steady with slight spring downturn expected.
In January the United States added 240000 total jobs raising employment to 80.6 million while the jobless total fell 56000 to 5.0 million. The seasonally adjusted rates eased to 5.9 percent from 6.0, with labor officials urging focus on total jobs the broader measure of labor market health. Nixon aides called the figures a sign of optimism and highlighted the doughnut versus hole metaphor for jobs.

A golden eagle captured by a wolf trap near Paris Texas was reported in good condition at the Dallas Zoo. Curator Larry Calvin said the bird is eating well and recovering from leg bruises after a week in captivity. The federally protected eagle has a 64 foot wingspan and is described as very rare in north Texas.
American fighter bombers destroyed an enemy surface to air missile and its transporter in southern Laos during daylight. Three anti aircraft guns were knocked out in North Vietnam's half of the DMZ as fighting flared in eastern Cambodia along the Saigon Phnom Penh highway. The action brought to 37 the number of proactive reaction strikes inside North Vietnam this year, with intensified operations tied to a major U.S. air campaign against the Ho Chi Minh Trail.
In London Nina van Pallandt says Clifford Irving wants to marry her though both are married. She refutes his claim of gathering autobiographical material from Howard Hughes in Mexico. In New York a former Hughes aide is willing to assess the manuscript for authenticity if the government accepts. Irving is due for grand jury appearance.
U S Representative Henry B Gonzalez told about 200 listeners at Municipal Auditorium that Texans can overcome racial differences when facing major issues but warned of heavy political gimmickry in 1972. He stressed merit over ethnicity and discussed minority influence on local to national politics.
