240000 New Jobs Boost U.S. Economy in January

In January the United States added 240000 total jobs raising employment to 80.6 million while the jobless total fell 56000 to 5.0 million. The seasonally adjusted rates eased to 5.9 percent from 6.0, with labor officials urging focus on total jobs the broader measure of labor market health. Nixon aides called the figures a sign of optimism and highlighted the doughnut versus hole metaphor for jobs.

Seas Roil Gulf Search For Tanker Missing With 39 Aboard

Winds to 27 mph whip seas in a vast Gulf of Mexico search area the size of West Virginia where a tanker vanished three days ago with 39 men aboard. The Coast Guard said the search area is greatly expanded covering 22,000 square miles.

Eagle Survives Trap Injuries at Dallas Zoo

A golden eagle captured by a wolf trap near Paris Texas was reported in good condition at the Dallas Zoo. Curator Larry Calvin said the bird is eating well and recovering from leg bruises after a week in captivity. The federally protected eagle has a 64 foot wingspan and is described as very rare in north Texas.

U S Planes Hit AA Sites North of DMZ

American fighter bombers destroyed an enemy surface to air missile and its transporter in southern Laos during daylight. Three anti aircraft guns were knocked out in North Vietnam's half of the DMZ as fighting flared in eastern Cambodia along the Saigon Phnom Penh highway. The action brought to 37 the number of proactive reaction strikes inside North Vietnam this year, with intensified operations tied to a major U.S. air campaign against the Ho Chi Minh Trail.
