Maid Of Cotton Honor Crowned By Mississippi Contestant

Susan Holder, 19, from Jackson Miss, was chosen as King Cotton’s 1968 goodwill ambassador over 18 finalists. The sophomore at Mississippi State College for Women will model cotton fashions and serve as the industry living emblem. First runnerup was Vicki Marie Palmer, while Seree Irene Scott placed second.

Marines Press Advantage In DMZ Clash Near Da Nang

Three U S Marine companies plunged into a Communist stronghold near the DMZ and routed two North Vietnamese units after a two day battle. At least 67 Marines were killed and 106 wounded while Communist losses were about 60. The fighting began with helicopter and boat landings south of Da Nang and 20 miles southeast of the DMZ. Marines faced heavy mortar and rifle fire as they attempted to break the enemy positions and supported South Vietnamese allies. Page 10 reports continued action and light from flares.

Sihanouk Praises Mansfield as Possible U S Mediator

Prince Norodom Sihanouk praised Senator Mike Mansfield as a potential U S mediator with Cambodia. He urged strengthening the International Control Commission and said Cambodia would not intervene militarily if combat occurred between American and Vietnamese forces in its territory. Bank Robbers Take $26000 From Rhome Bank

Two masked youths entered the First National Bank in Rhome, locked six clerks in a vault, and escaped with about $26,000. Bank president Van Maeyers said the robbers, estimated at 18 or 19, did not threaten violence and fled in an older model car. Rhomes lies in southeastern Wise County.

Successful Final Tally for Goodfellows in Lubbock

The 1967 Goodfellows Christmas program in Lubbock raised 9442 dollars and distributed toys fruit nuts and candy to about 9000 needy families on Christmas morning. Volunteers coordinated the effort as the anonymous membership group contributed to the holiday remembrance.
