Tijerina Freed In Courthouse Raid Verdict
Reles Lopez Tijerina acquitted by a district court jury on kidnapping and related charges from the Tierra Amarilla courthouse raid. The six men and six women deliberated about four hours before finding him not guilty on all counts, as tensions and emotions ran high among about 40 supporters in the Albuquerque courtroom. The trial centered on claims to old Spanish land grants and the armed attack that injured officers and a newsman. Tijerina acted as his own attorney and defended against assertions of a conspiracy, while prosecutors urged conviction on multiple counts with prison terms up to life in the gas chamber for first degree kidnapping.
