Oilman Clements Named Deputy Defense Secretary in Nixon Plan

President Nixon named William L. Clements Jr., oilman and Sedco chairman from Dallas, as principal deputy to the secretary of defense Elliott Richardson. The White House also floated a possible ambassador post for W. Clement Stone, Chicago insurer and major Nixon donor. Stone has contributed over $1 million to the campaign and chairs the National Center for Voluntary Action. Clements, 55, long tied to Texas oil and defense circles, would fill the No. 2 spot after government service lacking prior office. The move follows a 1970 commission recommending hard-line defense policy. Stone met Nixon for more than an hour Tuesday morning.
