West's check covers county long distance bills for 63 64

The Avalanche Journal reports county long distance charges for 1963 and 1964. County Auditor Royal Furgeson will urge Commissioners Court to tighten procedures on calls from all county offices. West says he paid the full amount after reviewing the bills, believing most calls related to county business, though records were incomplete. The county attorney says the check covered all long distance charges for 1963-64 regardless of reason. The study noted many calls from the attorney’s office to West’s associates and others. West argued calls were needed to plan staff in his absence and to monitor work at a rest home project near Freeport.
