Engineering program explores air corps courses and labs
Officials of the engineering division review plans for a salaried degree program and six aviation structures. Slaton cases lead news briefs on bond and mill damages
Two Slaton residents faced a federal grand jury bond of 500 dollars after a hearing before U S commissioner Mrs Olive Fluke. Lewis Dixon admitted throwing nine pieces of iron into second-cut linters at West Texas Cotton Oil company, while Vance Jeeter denied inducing the act. Damages at the mill reached 500 dollars and 48 hours of production were lost. Mary Josephine Williams, four months, died in Lubbock General hospital. Funeral service set in Rix Funeral Home chapel with burial at Lubbock cemetery. Mary Frances Candler, six, died in Lubbock General Hospital and will be sent to Colorado City for services. Lt Marjorie Bond, daughter of Mr and Mrs Clifford Bond, arrived in England. Pvt D F Eady received the Purple Heart for wounds in Germany.

Cotton Production Increase Forecast
The agriculture department estimated the 1944 U S cotton crop at 12 359 000 bales up 39 000 from November 1 but below the ten year average of 12 455 000. Last year’s crop was 11 427 000 bales with a yield of 295 3 pounds per acre, 22 9 pounds higher than 1943. The census bureau noted 10 274 385 bales had been ginned by Dec 1. One in five U S adults works in food production and distribution.
