The article explains the metric system, developed in France, based on units of ten with the metre as length, the gram or liter as base quantities, and notes its limited official use in the United States. It mentions NASA adoption, pharmacy and medical uses, and describes a national opinion poll of 1,502 adults on metric adoption. It also includes historical notes on King Chulalongkorn of Siam.
A 1960s state report warns of devastating earthquakes from San Francisco to Los Angeles, volcanic eruptions in the north, and tsunamis along the coast. It estimates billions in potential losses and outlines measures such as stricter building codes, zoning, warning systems, and increased state planning resources to reduce damage by up to about 5 percent at a 6 billion cost.
Reports say Mexico's state oil firm Pemex and government actions drive gasoline costs up. Officials describe cross border movement and labor talks as affecting prices, with residents near the Paso border noting cheaper supply scarce due to policy shifts.
