Cotton harvest may top 1.7 million bales South Plains

South Plains farmers forecast a 1956 crop near 1.7 million bales, possibly setting a world record for a 20 county area. If realized, output could bring $225 to $300 million to area farmers, exceeding the 1949 record of about 1.64 million bales.

Runaway speeders shoot it out with officers in Texas Panhandle

In a brushy Shamrock area east of town two unknown fugitives armed with automatic rifles engaged Texas and Oklahoma officers, killing a 19 year old and wounding two deputies. The gun battle drew 150 officers and volunteers with searchlights, flare drops, and bloodhounds as daylight approached.

Wallace W. Rix Dies at 76 In Lubbock

Wallace W. Rix, pioneer Texas businessman and longtime director of Rix Funeral Home and Rix Life Co., died at 11 a.m. Saturday in Methodist Hospital after illness. He was 76 and had entered the hospital Thursday. A Episcopal rites and city cemetery burial are planned with services at his church.
