Tinsel tree tops Lubbock Home Lighting Contest

The 21st annual Lubbock Avalanche-Journal Home Christmas Lighting Contest features a tinsel triangular tree taller than the house and six gift toy figures by Ed and Mrs. Watson at 4405 Mth St. Their doorway display includes a tree of folded index cards and a cloudlike net background with gold paper. Marines Engage North Vietnamese Near Con Thien Front

U S Marines fought heavy combat with North Vietnamese forces near the Con Thien outpost along the DMZ. After about four hours the Marines reported driving the enemy from fortified bunkers with 15 Marines killed and 53 wounded while North Vietnamese losses were 26 killed. The week’s U S battle deaths rose to 15 058.

Recruiting Suspended by Army National Guard

The Army National Guard halted all recruiting to reach an authorized strength of 400000 by next summer. As of late October the Guard had 417300 on its rolls and officials noted few overstrength issues despite the pause. Defense Secretary McNamara later announced a 3 percent increase for both Guard and Reserve units to staff about 125 new riot control sized units.

Eastern Europe Quake Kills 19

A powerful earthquake jolted Debar in Yugoslavia and devastated nearby areas in Albania. Eight dead and 40 injured in Debar, including seven children. Albanian radio reported 11 killed and 134 injured in eastern Albania. Nearly every dwelling in Debar, population 8,000, was leveled or uninhabitable.
