Denver City Youth dies in pickup wreck

Charles E. Freeman a Denver City High School student aged 16 died from injuries after a pickup overturned on a curve. Two companions were injured while other area youths suffered nonfatal injuries. Freeman who lettered in track and played football was a member of the Spanish Club. Funeral is Sunday at First Baptist Church with burial at Denver City Memorial Cemetery. Survivors include his parents a sister and a brother.

IRS Man Arrested In Lubbock Bet Tax Case

IRS agents arrested 65 year old Delbert D. Smith in Southwest Lubbock for accepting wagers without paying the federal occupational tax. He posted 1500 dollar bond and was found with cash, an adding machine, football line sheets, a .38 pistol and tax returns. Evidence links gambling activity to state playoff bets and bowl games.

24 Survive In Fiery Tragedy At Idlewild Crash

An Eastern Air Lines DC-7B crashed and burned on a fogbound Idlewild runway injuring many. Of 51 aboard 24 survived, five officials said. two were unaccounted for. Debris covered a wide area as rescue teams battled the flames.

City seeks school district share of crossing guard costs
