Spitz Leads U S Swim Wins and Neilson Upsets Gould
Marvelous Mark Spitz set a world record in the 200 meter freestyle and anchored a relay as the United States dominated swimming with two golds, while 16-year-old Sandra Neilson from El Monte upset Australia's Shane Gould to win the women's 100 meter freestyle. Beverly Whitfield earned silver in the 200 meter breaststroke as Shirley Babashoff took silver in trials. The U S basketball team routed Cuba 67 48 in round robin play, with Dwight Jones scoring 18. The Mecca of the Games saw East Germany and the Soviet Union also win medals in cycling and trap shooting as the U S held a strong medal lead.
