Four people die and another is listed in critical condition after a collision between a small foreign made car and a pickup on a rural road near Nazareth. Andrea Valdez de Garza 26 died en route to Plains Memorial Hospital. Rueben Garza 26 is in critical condition at Northwest Texas Hospital. The identities of three other deceased men remain unrevealed with Manuel Morales tentatively named among them. Danny Holloway 24 of Happy survived with no injuries.
An industrial fire fed by wood shavings and oily wastes caused about 40 000 damage to Retco Dura Lift Manufacturing Company in far East Lubbock. Roy E Thompson reported 30 000 damage to machinery and products, while the building loss approached 10 000 per fire officials. The blaze started near 4 30 p m on the Idalous Highway two miles east of Loop 289. It was caused by burning matches igniting manufacturing waste. Extinguishers failed to stop the fire, and firefighting units battled the blaze for over three hours. The fire was contained to the irrigation well fittings and pump shaft section.
