The 1965-66 cotton season on the South Plains begins with three first bales ginned in Dickens Floyd and Lubbock counties. A 465 pound bale owned by Woodrow McArthur and a 415 pound bale by Dolightly are noted, with 630 pound Floyd County bale and premium payments announced as the lint and seed values are recorded. Authorities pursue two prime suspects in the death and rape of Hazel Woford a 44 year old Lockney beauty shop operator found strangled in her home. District attorney John B. Stapleton says about 50 people have been questioned with no charges yet filed as investigators probe her personal life for clues.

Donald Dawson of Costa Mesa California, who went to Saigon to learn his brother Daniel’s fate, returned with the Viet Cong’s claim that Daniel was dead and a vest allegedly worn by him. Dawson said he and interpreter Colette Emberger were held in a jungle stronghold near Bien Hoa after being captured on April 23. Dawson plans to return home next week.
Astronauts Gordon Cooper and Charles Conrad extend their eight day mission and plan a Sunday splashdown in the Atlantic, targeting 10 hours 26 minutes 59 seconds after 8 a.m. CST. A passing Russian critique accompanies news of their earth photography experiments for the Defense Department.

A massive Du Pont Neoprene plant blaze in Louisville Kentucky produced more than 26 explosions in nine hours. Ten workers died and 35 injured as flames and smoke filled Rubbertown. Authorities evacuated residents and deployed National Guardsmen amid fears of a yet larger gas tank explosion. damage was estimated at 5 to 10 million dollars.
Pittsburgh report: with a strike set for midnight Sept 1, steel negotiations collapsed after USW rejected a last ditch wage offer. Union president Abel said the industry offer was under 40 cents an hour, about 6 cents apart. No meetings scheduled as Simkin urged joint talks to avert a nationwide strike. See STEEL TALKS Page 10.
Perry Smaw an 83 year old farmer near Melton was beaten, his tongue cut out, and left in critical condition after an attack during demonstrations. Two suspects, David Lee McAlpine and Roosevelt Long, were arrested on assault charges. Governor Wallace offered a $1000 reward as state troopers joined the investigation.
