Rescue Efforts Delayed by Missing Drill Bit At Mine

In Azleton Pa rescuers faced a 12 hour delay as a 30 inch drill bit needed to enlarge the escape hole for Henry Throfie 28 and David Fellin 58 arrived from Dallas. State Mine Secretary HB Charmbury called it a serious setback but not a derailment of the rescue plan. Louis Bova 42 remains unconfirmed and a smaller drilling rig continues toward a fourth shaft to aid the surface escape.

U S Moves Nuclear Units From Morocco

The United States Air Force ends operations at three Moroccan bases and withdraws about half the personnel. Morocco will assume control as about 2,000 new workers are posted for Nouasseur and nearby depots. The move aligns with post independence treaties and advances in missile and tanker tech reducing base importance. The withdrawal saves an estimated 14.5 million dollars abroad.

Bank musician linked to two southeast Missouri holdups

Jackson man Partridge, 38, director of a high school and municipal bands, confessed Friday to being the stickup man in two bank robberies. Cape Girardeau County Sheriff Crites said $7,100 was recovered hidden at Partridge’s home. townsfolk say the money and the robberies have upset the community. Partridge was arrested after leading his band at a gala concert, with four witnesses identifying him. His wife defended him as innocent while the couple has five children.

Griffin to Austin Home loan probe data to be discussed

State officials will hear new information from District Attorney Alton Griffin in Austin Monday about home loan irregularities. The grand jury convenes September 2 and may bring indictments. Griffin will be joined by HL Doe and will confer with the state public safety department the attorney general's office and the Texas Real Estate Commission.

Blackburn named Texas Pavilions general manager at World's Fair

David T. Blackburn will lead the Texas Pavilions at the 1954 55 New York World's Fair on a two year leave of absence from Great Southwest Corporation and Six Flags Over Texas. Angus Wynne Jr announced the appointment saying the pavilions will showcase Texas today and its history with exhibits from oil cattle shipping space tourism and other industries. Blackburn previously ran Lubbock Civic Auditorium and Caliseum and held roles at the State Fair Music Hall and Summer Musicals.

County Reports First Bale Of Season In Lubbock Area

Melvin Walters of Slaton led with a 374 pound bale after adding a second load to reach 450 pounds. The bale won a $150 prize from the Slaton Chamber of Commerce with $100 and $50 for second and third places to be awarded at the Farmer Merchant barbecue. Walters and wife Missa live three miles south of Acuff and cultivate cotton across 14 acres.
