In Huntsville Texas convicts are coding two years of driver records to store and retrieve titles and registrations by computer. Beginning in 1970 mail invites will replace hours in line for license plates as the DPS moves toward digitized records and faster service at the courthouse.
President Nixon postponed a plan to cut U S forces in Vietnam after a surge in attacks and enemy infiltration. The decision, previously due by August 6, will be issued after Nixon returns to Washington in September, with no ruling yet on further withdrawals or ground troop removal by year end.
Booming storms dumped inches of rain across the South Plains from Shallowater to Anton. A tornado touched down near U.S. 84 west of Shallowater at 3 30 pm with unconfirmed twisters near Abernathy and Anton. No injuries were reported. Flooding plagued FM 1914 and city streets in Anton.
Lubbock police plan to sew American flag shoulder patches on all uniformed officers by Sept. 1, with hats unchanged. Chief J. T. Alley said patches arrived Wednesday and some officers wore them by Thursday night.
In Jones Stadium more than 1,000 candidates received degrees at Texas Tech Technological College’s outdoor commencement, moving to Texas Tech University by Sept. 1. Clouds threatened the outdoor ceremony as 3,500 guests watched the first open-sky graduation in years.
Emily swirled in the Gulf of California off Mexico’s west coast prompting flood alerts. Heavy rains triggered rising waters and warnings of more floods as nine people were killed and about 100000 homes affected.
The Texas Senate, after a 71 hour filibuster, approved a 342 million tax package by a 15 14 vote to raise revenue and modify the sales tax on food. The measure now goes to the House amid doubts it can clear before the special session ends at midnight Tuesday.
A House Senate compromise tax bill proposes 505 million dollars in new taxes over two years. It would add 35 cents per ten dollars on snacks and raise three cents per beer in groceries. Alcoholic coverage and repairs would also fall under the sales tax starting January 1.
