United Press International reports Ohio Republican Congressman Clarence J Brown died at Bethesda Naval Hospital from uremia due to kidney failure at age 70. A long time GOP power, he served on the House Rules Committee and helped author Hoover era government reorganization commissions credited with savings. President Johnson called him a distinguished public servant. Brown lived in Blanchester and was a vocal critic of Roosevelt Truman and Kennedy domestic programs.
Severe storms struck Texas cities with winds up to 80 mph. Wichita Falls tower evacuation followed an 80 mph gust tearing the terminal canopy. Anderson Refining Co. tower toppled near Palestine, with 20 000 to 25 000 dollar damage. Roanoke and Presidio reported heavy rain and hail as heat persisted elsewhere.
