Loop 289 Southwest leg plan gains cautious city approval

Lubbock city commissioners approved the third segment of Loop 289 from the Tohoka Highway to the Brownfield Highway on an emergency basis for a pool hall ordinance while upholding zoning commission decisions on two appeals. The session, led by Jerry Hall, included a 62 item agenda with routine items and a hold on final approval to allow the traffic department to finalize adjustments.

Suspect Held in $65,000 Dallas Bank Robbery

Ex convict Frank Karl Fleck, 59, arrested as a suspect in the June 2 National Bank of Commerce heist in Dallas. Police say he was found in a car on a Farmers Branch street with $1,000 on him and awaits charges. The downtown bank was robbed by a masked bandit with a sawed off shotgun, taking under two minutes before fleeing in a stolen car. Fleck had denied the robbery and had spent time in nine prisons.

Small Boy and Mother Die in Spur Intersection Crash

A Spur woman Rosa Martinez Perez and her son Paul Perez Jr died in a freak car pickup crash three miles west of Spur at a dirt road intersection. Richard Rowden and Miguel Perez were treated for injuries. The crash occurred at 40 pan when a 1954 sedan struck a 1962 pickup, ejecting all from the vehicles into a ditch and snapping a utility pole.

Kennedy Aid Plan Advances Despite GOP Attacks

The House approved the $1.1 billion foreign aid authorization Thursday night with Democratic support holding firm against GOP attempts to cut the bill. A final roll call was postponed to today amid a technicality, as amendments to the contingency fund and military aid were beaten down. The bill also includes a school project in West Texas to house 500 to 600 workers and train hundreds of retarded children, with site selection to occur later and at least 200 acres promised by bidding cities.
