Israeli planes attacked a suspected guerrilla base in northeast Lebanon while Israeli ground troops killed three Arab infiltrators. The actions came less than 24 hours before Secretary of State Kissinger arrived in the Middle East to push toward a Sinai accord.

Clovis Girl Is Diagnosed With Diphtheria

An 8 year old girl in Clovis New Mexico is diagnosed with suspected diphtheria. Health officials from the State Health Department and a team of communicable disease experts are administering preventive treatment to the girl’s family and playmates. A community immunization clinic operates at the Curry County Health Department courthouse today tomorrow and next week during set hours. The case remains under study awaiting throat culture results.

New Jail Beatings Reported After Kangaroo Court Incidents

Two more Lubbock County Jail inmates report beatings after alleged kangaroo court proceedings. An Aug. 9 sexual abuse allegation was disclosed to deputies and later to the Avalanche Journal. Edward Martinez, 23, faces sexual abuse charges. a second incident involves an inmate beaten for refusing oral sex.

Four Men Sought In Robberies

Police searched for four black men after two robberies earlier in the day. At about 8 30 p m two suspects demanded money from a Shamrock Station attendant and cut his arm with a sharp object. They fled on foot with more than 150 dollars. A separate incident at Lynch Hat Works saw two suspects empty a cash register of 45 85 dollars. The attendant suffered only minor injuries.

State Search Launched For Escaped Trustees

Two escapees from the Lubbock County Jail remained at large after slipping away in a sheriff's department car around 6 a.m. Wednesday. Samuel Murphree and Steve Fowler, both of Lubbock, were not deemed dangerous as a DPS helicopter and local agencies joined the search. The duo fled from the jailer, leading to a statewide alert, with a pickup later reported at the J. D. Huffstetler Truck Co. lot.
