President Signs Law on Student Loans to speed aid

President Nixon signed emergency legislation delaying HEW regulations to allow guaranteed student loans for the 1972 73 year. The measure extends the old needs test rule for families under 15000 and limits loans to 1500 dollars this year while waiving new limits until March 1973. Nixon urged lenders and schools to resume processing pending applications and stated the program has issued over 5 million loans worth 4.6 billion to more than 3 million students since 1985 with over 1.3 billion borrowed in the last year.
