Report says Robert Christner, a 27 year old American tourist from Sparks Nevada, expelled from Moscow on espionage charges amid the U2 affair. He told newsmen he carried two cameras and claimed he was merely shooting railroad scenes and other sights. He was en route to Helsinki by train after being ordered to leave immediately.
The United States retrieved a man made object from orbit for the first time, marking a psychological and technological victory in the space race. The Discoverer No 13 capsule, about 300 pounds, reentered from 200 miles above the North Pole and splashed into the Pacific recovery area between Hawaii and Kodiak Island. A Navy helicopter recovered it as Air Force planes circled overhead. General Bernard A Schriever said the recovery brings us closer to manned space flight.
In Eagle Pass Texas a couple surrendered after Deputy Sheriff Jones was shot on a porch. Police prepared murder charges against both Arturo and Maria Rosales though authorities indicated it was Rosales who did most of the shooting. The case remained under investigation as officers recovered weapons and debated the legality of pursuing the larger public dilation of the feedlot odor issue.
Area youth faces a second round derby as the winner of heat six advances. Competitors include Roger Alan Clement, Bruce Jensen, and Allen Martin Frantz of Warren near Akron. Officials will inspect racers today and set a fee.

Pawtucket officials charged 29 year old James E. McParlin with the January murder of Leo Halal, a 28 year old furniture salesman, whose body was found buried in a wooded area after a dispute with McParlin over a romance with Halal's wife Joan. Russell Banville, 21, faces charges for helping bury the body. Halal’s wife reportedly believed her husband had left and was unaware of his death.
Goldwater leads Senate conservatives in a battle to amend the proposed minimum wage bill, warning it would cost about 500,000 jobs especially in retailing while Kennedy pushes debate forward. The measure would lift the wage from 1 to 1.25 dollars and extend coverage to nearly five million workers. The State Department says the U S does not recognize the rebel Lao government after a coup.
