Miss Lubbock Dorothy Carmack of 2010 Seventeenth travels by air to Port Arthur for the Texas contest to select the entrant for the national Miss America pageant. Chaperone Mrs. Mel Leslie of Tahoka accompanies her as they proceed toward Atlantic City, N J, for the national event.
Terror grips northern Dominican Republic towns after six day earthquake tidal waves kill 73 and leave 20,000 homeless. Food shortages threaten Bahia Escocesa as roads and bridges wash out hindering relief efforts. Bajio reports 39 dead and 139 injured.
The 79th Congress approved 12.91 billion for veterans benefits including a 2.43 billion terminal pay bill. World War II veterans receive the largest share while other wars’ veterans aid is included. General Bradley warns against low quality opportunities and calls for policy shift.
The Associated Press reports another stretch of 100 degree temperatures across Texas. Dallas and Sulphur Springs hit 103, Fort Worth and Wichita Falls 102, Sherman 101, with 100 elsewhere in San Angelo Big Spring Quanah Laredo and Tyler. West Texas saw light rainfall in Harpersville and El Paso.
Frank Garrett Cook aged 58 of 1504 Avenue E died after a heart attack Saturday afternoon at the Stanton Feeding company pens two miles NW of Lubbock on College avenue. He was an employee of the feeding company. Survivors include his wife Addie Cook two sons J D and F E Cook both of Lubbock and three daughters Allie Benson Eulala Adams both of Lubbock and Frankie Mac Wier of Gaston Ala. Arrangements by Plains funeral home pending arrival of relatives.
An Electra oil field worker was identified as among two men linked to robbing Walters bank of about 33000 in Oklahoma. Authorities blockaded Red River bridges at Denison Bonham and Paris and set roadblocks in De Queen and Ashdown as a green Chevrolet coupe headed toward Texas was pursued.
In Nanking on August 10 a bleak assessment by America’s top envoys surfaced as peace prospects for China dimmed. General Marshall and Dr. John Leighton Stuart warned correspondents amid ongoing fighting between Chinese Communists and government forces. Marines also battled train wreckers in North China, with officials debating a coalition government as a last effort.
Avalanche-Journal reports Texas Technological College adds 28 new faculty for the 1946-47 session to cover resignations growth in enrollment and postwar returnees. President Whyburn cites inadequate salaries and lack of housing as main hiring hurdles. Dr. Truman W. Camp to chair English department after Dr. Gates resigns to join Texas Christian University.
In Thens Alabama a fist fight between two white veterans sparked race rioting. Authorities estimate 50 to 100 negroes injured as mobs of up to 2000 were present. About 10 whites arrested. order restored by nightfall. Local officials report nonfatal injuries but lack full totals.
Texas endures its worst drought in a decade with record heat eight to nine degrees above average. West Texas ranchers cull cattle as rain remains scarce. San Angelo reports only two and a half inches in nine months. Cotton crop prospects dim as heat and arid summers shrink yields.
President Truman signed a bill halting an automatic Social Security tax increase and freezing the payroll levy at 1 percent through 1947. The measure adds 150 million dollars annually for needy aged, blind, and dependent children, boosting monthly benefits for about 2 million elderly and 772,000 children. Survivors protection for World War II veterans' families is provided for three years without charge.
Light showers touched Lubbock Tahoka Lamesa and Brownfield on Saturday with Lubbock recording a 95 degree high, five degrees below Friday. The West Texas Gas main line station noted the cooler day and minor sprinkles across the South Plains.
Two new polio cases admitted to Plainview hospitals raise the summer total to 17. The newest patients are Shirley Peake, 11, daughter of Mr and Mrs W L Peake, and Mickey Vineyard, 11, son of Mr and Mrs George Vineyard, both from Amarillo.
A three day 4-H encampment for district 4 boys opens Monday at Lubbock Army Airfield. About 200 boys from 20 counties, with 20 county agents and 15 or more leaders, will participate. A three man team will be chosen for a state meet after rifle shooting sessions. An egg grading demonstration, reports on National 4-H Congress and Camp, and barracks housing are planned as the camp runs to Wednesday afternoon.
Twenty two persons were injured in a cog railway wreck near the summit of Mount Washington New Hampshire. Mrs Norman Fagerquist Worcester Mass suffered fractures of both legs and possible internal injuries. Fifteen others were hospitalized with minor injuries, six treated and released, and five shaken up but not hospitalized.
A wave of burglaries on July 31 prompted a broad search across West Texas and New Mexico. Ellis R. Walker and Dean Price were arrested in Brownfield and brought to Lubbock County Jail after statements linked them to four of five Lubbock burglaries. About $300 in clothing was stolen from Spic and Span cleaners, with most items recovered the next day and some found during arrests.
Washington reports price ceilings for grain and other foods are amid hearings before the three member price decontrol board. One hundred plus spokesmen from industry, farm, labor and consumer groups are scheduled to testify Monday through Thursday on grains seeds livestock cottonseed soybeans milk and their products. The price lid is lifted by act of Congress until August 21 on these groups as the board decides whether ceilings return.
The Texas Poll shows Beauford Jester with 59 percent to Homer Rainey’s lead, with 7 percent undecided. If undecided are eliminated, Jester leads 63 to 37. The poll, conducted Aug 5–7 with 8.5 percent black voters, notes turnout will heavily affect Rainey’s share.
A committee of the Texas Technological College board will study installing prefabricated housing units for 110 veterans at Lubbock. The panel meets 10 a.m. Thursday in the president’s offices, with members Thompson Collier Ratliff Spillier McGee and area business leaders and veterans’ committee to attend.
Local labor leaders and a committee have mapped a Labor Day program for Lubbock on Sept. 2. A parade and picnic are set to revive the prewar celebration with merchants asked to close until noon. The Labor Day committee chaired by Jim Lorimer includes Bob Samson and G. A. Gafford and will coordinate unions, floats, and a parade along the usual route with police cooperation.
Paris augmenting Trieste dispute Premier Alcide de Gasperi urged the peace conference to postpone for a year a settlement of Trieste and Venezia Giulia and other frontier issues. He argued the delay would help Italy recover, noting armament cuts and reparations while Albania’s admittance was debated. The conference adjourned to Monday with his plea deferrd.
Sherman slaying suspect arrested in Denison after being linked to the Kreager case. The 82 year old Mrs. Kreager disappeared June 17 and was found in a north Sherman area well. The suspect had a fortune teller slip naming the body location and was detained by police. Olin Van Zandt prepared to question the Denison resident.
Bonham Texas August 10 Speaker of the House Sam Rayburn said he has no definite plans for the summer but will rest. He arrived at his farm home with Rep Eugene Worley of Shamrock who is visiting his wife's parents in the area.
Partly cloudy across West Texas and New Mexico with warmer conditions in the Panhandle and northeast New Mexico Sunday. Highs reach 75 to 95 plus in the south and southeast, with scattered thunderstorms in the afternoons and evenings. Nestling readings logged by Texas experiments station show variable temperatures through the day, peaking near 95.
