Texans for Tax Reform charged the 100 percent consumer tax package is oppressive and calls for reform. Lori Johnson, a 15 year old farmer's daughter from Lancaster California, becomes the first girl entered in the Ante lope Valley Rural Olympics automatic hayloading contest. The event awards 125 dollars to the winner and draws male rivals who question a girl's ability to operate the loader. Lori's father and others support her bid as four machines compete for the prize.
Thirteen year old Mark Dean Price was struck by a moving rail car at about 3 50 p m Friday suffering arm injuries. He was treated at Methodist Hospital where doctors saved his arms but he lost two fingers from his left hand. Two other youths were present and Price was aided by James Green and Charles Mackey before being rushed to the hospital. Police identified the engineer as E L Adams 42 of 2905 Ave J Burlington Railroad employee.
Diplomatic sources say oilman John Hurd of Texas is being considered for another ambassadorial assignment after withdrawing his Venezuela nomination. Hurd of Laredo cited concerns over his impartiality as Venezuela seeks to boost oil exports to the United States. No alternative country was named as a possible posting.
Blood samples from Apollo 11 crew Neil Armstrong Michael Collins and Edwin Aldrin will determine quarantine status after moon soil exposure. Results expected to decide release for the three astronauts and 20 quarantined associates with possible late Sunday or early Monday clearance. If pathogens found the entire 23 person group remains isolated until identification or cure. Additional samples taken from 20 support personnel as part of the test.
President Nixon unveils a sweeping plan to scrap the welfare system and provide a base federal payment for every poor family with dependents, starting with 1,600 dollars a year for a family of four. The proposal would expand recipients to about 22.4 million and add about 4 billion dollars in federal outlays, offset by some state cost cuts. The plan shifts manpower programs to states and restructures the antipoverty agency toward experimentation, with 1 billion dollars to begin sharing tax revenues with states.
ATHENS UPI report says Aristotle Onassis and wife Jacqueline declined President Nixon's invitation to the Apollo 11 space team gala. Friends said Mrs Onassis and her husband were invited but would not attend.
