Lonely Hearts Hopeful From London Encounters Amarillo Hoax

Mrs Gloria Clark a 34 year old English divorcee arrived from London to marry a man promising a home and security for her 3 year old daughter. She said she was held in a rundown trailer by the man she met through a lonely hearts magazine. Police expect no arrest as the man’s promises could not be kept.

Lubbock School Board Sets Six Cent Tax Hike for 1967-68

The Lubbock school trustees approve a $17,871,031 budget and raise the tax rate by six cents per $100, taking total to 1.56. The increase funds record expenditures, with 49 cents for interest and sinking and 1.07 for the general fund. The vote was 5-1 with Bill Kingsbery dissenting.

Showers Threaten Panhandle After Severe Storms

A Canadian cold front drove severe thunderstorms across the Texas Panhandle late Tuesday. Beaver County Oklahoma and surrounding areas reported blinding rain and hail as roads flooded south of Beaver. Showers were expected to reach northern South Plains today with a 20 percent rain chance, while Midland could see 10 percent. No injuries reported though a drive-in awning was damaged by strong winds.

Tax surcharge dates shift affects 1967 and 1968 costs

The shift from a 6 percent to a 10 percent income tax surcharge changes the tax bite over years. Under the new plan individuals pay less in 1967 but much more in 1968. A sample childless couple earning 7500 would owe 23 more in 1967 with the 10 percent rate versus 27 with the July 1 6 percent plan, while 1968 costs rise to 91 versus 55 respectively.

Pentagon Draft Calls Fall to 17 000 in October

The Pentagon announced a 17 000 man draft call for October the lowest in six months all for the Army. The monthly planning target had been about 24 000 to meet a 480 000 troop ceiling in Vietnam. Previous months included January 15 600 February 11 400 May 18 000 June 19 800 July 19 900 August 29 000 September 25 000.

Texas Cotton Surplus Shrinks With 1967 Harvest Forecast

Washington reports Texas will harvest about 2 775 000 bales in 1967, smallest since 1946, under tightened acreage to cut the surplus. The crop compares with 3 175 000 bales last year and 9 575 000 in 1966, with 9 724 000 acres planted, the smallest in a century.

Dallas approves $175 million bond issue in record turnout
