Johnson to sign historic voting rights bill today

President Johnson will travel to the Capitol to sign the voting rights measure about 10 30 a m CST in the Presidents Room adjoining the Senate chamber. The Justice Department plans swift action to end poll tax barriers and may file suits this afternoon in Alabama Mississippi Texas and Virginia.

Texas officials condemn FPC gas price ruling in Permian Basin

Gen Waggoner Carr says Texas will appeal to federal courts for relief from the two price levels set by the Federal Power Commission for Permian Basin natural gas. The FPC set 16.5 cents per MCF for gas well gas and 14.5 cents for all other gas, including residue and casing head. Carr Langdon and Gov. Connally, who pushed for 20 cents per MCF, warn of reduced state revenue and slower drilling unless remedied.

Suspect Charged In Texico Bank Robbery

FBI arrested Clovis meat packing employee Jack Diamond 22 in El Paso on armed robbery charges for a Texico New Mexico bank heist of 5313. A 17 year old Clovis companion was questioned and released. Diamond's bond was set at 20000 and extradition to New Mexico was waived.

Train strikes flat car injuring film crew in California

Seventeen people including rock singer Jan Berry of Jan and Dean were hurt when a train hit a railroad flat car during filming in Chatsworth California. Director Barry Shear suffered possible serious injuries as the flat car was toppled, and 16 people were hospitalized or treated for injuries. Authorities cited a signaling mixup causing the train to speed toward the flat car, lifting it from the tracks and scattering equipment and crew.

Purse Snatcher Crushed In Subway Tunnel After Knife Attack

Robert J. Brown, 25, of the Bronx, stabbed three on a Bronx subway platform before clinging to a moving train and being crushed in a tunnel. He targeted Mary Murphy, 26, her young daughter, and wounded two men and a 75-year-old woman as crowds pursued him. A mangled body was found in the Harlem River tubes after the train departed.

Zoning Okays for 82nd and Ave H and Four Other Requests

The City Planning and Zoning Commission approved five zoning changes including 82nd Street and Ave H commercial zones. A high rise apartment plan at 23rd and Peoria was withdrawn. A C-2 local retail zone near 23rd and Ave O was approved with screening. A-2 for a southeast corner tract was also approved.
