Fire Hits Cattlemen's Restaurant and United Market on College Avenue
A major blaze on North College Avenue in Lubbock damaged the Cattlemen's Restaurant and United Super Market late Thursday night. Flames gutted roof sections and smoke and water damaged both businesses. nine fire units battled the fire, with some roof collapse and a near trapping of a firefighter. Investigators planned to continue probing the cause.

A group of 89 residents met Thursday night to form a permanent organization aimed at eliminating odors from a southeast Lubbock feed lot area. Marvin McLarty Jr was named permanent chairman and Fred West secretary. A committee will petition the City Commission about an 11,000-signature request for odor relief as Lewter Feed Lots announced an immediate trial of a deodorant product from an Oklahoma City firm.

Latin American boy saved from near drowning at motel pool
Eleven-year-old Ernest Garcia lay at the bottom of a 10-foot pool when Rocky Carver jumped in and pulled him out. Garcia, son of Mr and Mrs David Garcia, was found unconscious but in good condition at Methodist Hospital after the rescue by the Wayfarer Motel owner’s son.

Brownfield youth dies after grain elevator blast
Phillip Reeves, 17, of Sarepta Louisiana, died in Terry County Memorial Hospital after suffering third degree burns in the Goodpasture Grain and Milling elevator explosions. Reeves had been rescued by Reese AFB helicopter crew and had moved to Brownfield recently to enroll as a senior. Paul Aiken died earlier. Reeves survived for two hours before passing away. Survivors include his parents and three brothers. M J Parson of San Antonio remains hospitalized in good condition.
