Slaton, Aus 4. With five weeks to opening, Slaton public schools confront a severe teacher shortage. Principal Parker notes two vacancies remain and no resignations have been received yet. Britain has not moved to fill posts for safe corridor planning and European supplies distribution remains unsettled.
Sergeant Fuqua of SPAAF survived three bailouts over enemy territory and returned each time. He endured heavy anti aircraft fire and injuries, was carried on stretchers by Partisan forces, then evacuated to the coast and an island before a British ship brought him home. He later returned to the United States and received the Medal and Distinguished Flying Cross.
Sgt. Fuqua survived three bail-outs over enemy territory starting October 14, 1944. After an AA attack cripples his aircraft over Bleckhammer, he and crew were rescued by peasants and Chetniks and endured a 14 day trek through snow to safety. A second mission to Poland led to another bail-out near a German center in Yugoslavia, aided by Partisans, with damage from flak and engine loss.
