Governor John Connally defended Texas anti poverty efforts including Neighbor hood Youth Corps Head Start and Job Corps at a news conference, blasting unnamed Labor Department sources and stating he will veto when needed. He cited $29,234,563 in approved grants and contracts and said he may seek a second term as he weighs a Senate run.
El Paso Senator Ralph Yarborough charged Governor Connally blocked a Farmers Union anti poverty pilot project in southwest Texas. He told the AFL CIO convention that the plan would train rural youth in Atascosa Bexar Comal Frio Guadalupe Karnes Medina and Wilson counties. Yarborough urged Congress to restrict governors veto power over such programs and criticized Connally for delaying the $1.25 minimum wage by demanding extra information and evidence.
Police optimism grows that killers of Shirley Ann Stark and Susan Rigsby will be found, with many leads checked. Bodies of the 21 year olds were found near Austin after missing since July 18 while they enrolled at the University of Texas. Luggage and a lamp thought to belong to the two were found in a goodwill box.
