A Levelland group urged the State Highway Commission to widen Highway 116 into four lanes into Lubbock. The delegation faced a cool response as they argued for bond issues to fund the project.
Levelland officials pressed the Highway Commission for a 17.5 mile widening from the east city limits to Spur 309 in Lubbock. The project, vital for 48,000 cars daily and local commerce, is estimated at 2.303 million dollars with 80 percent of right of way secured before funding gaps halted work. Commission chair Reagan Houston promised an answer in 30 to 60 days.
A National Weather Service summary shows South Plains July rainfall and cooler than normal averages. Lubbock posted an all time 75 degree monthly average, while Dimmitt and Paducah recorded the coolest and warmest readings among area towns. Rain totals exceeded four inches across the region with Lubbock hitting 7.20 inches in 12 days of precipitation.
A Beechcraft carrying 1,330 pounds of marijuana was seized at Terry County Airport near Brownfield, tied to an organized smuggling operation. Authorities pursued the pilot amid a monthlong surveillance, with drones and radar tracking showing the craft’s Mexico route and links to prior South Plains seizures.

In Loveland Colorado a weather break allowed CH53 Chinook helicopters to evacuate 104 survivors from the Big Thompson flood from the canyon where at least 76 people were killed and over 260 injured. Ground crews expect a rising death toll as they access the area and some residents opted to stay.
